“Remember Yau Ma Tei” and “Remember Nga Tsin Wai.” are the interactive multimedia online archives explore Hong Kong’s collective memories under Hong Kong Memory Project, presenting its history, culture, and heritage through a dynamic digital lens.
The Challenge
The “Challenge” segment of this project involves a collaborative effort with the research team to reconstruct and visualize historical content from scant resources. To address the limitations of available materials, I engaged directly with interviewees and consulted library archives, which helped shape the format in which the research is presented to the audience.
This process required not only meticulous research but also creative imagination to fill the gaps left by history. To compensate for the scarcity of photographic evidence, we employed illustrations, allowing us to vividly bring past experiences and settings to life, enhancing the authenticity and engagement of our digital archives.
Remember Yau Ma Tei
“Remember Yau Ma Tei” brings to life the voices of 21 long-term residents, whose narratives paint a vivid tableau of the district’s evolving landscape—capturing the essence of streets and landmarks that have faded or are fading into the backdrop of modernity. These stories go beyond historical recounting; they reflect the personal hardships and joys experienced by the community, turning everyday locations into markers of personal and collective identity.

Remember Nga Tsin Wai
“Remember Nga Tsin Wai” explores the personal and familial histories that intertwine with the broader narrative of Hong Kong’s development post-World War II. It offers a unique perspective on local history, told through the recollections of the original inhabitants whose roots permeate deep into the land now known as East Kowloon, despite the transformations brought about by urban development.
Using a rich mix of multimedia elements including illustrations, historical photos, and audio materials, I have recreated scenes from old Hong Kong, complete with interactive features. This approach not only enriches the historical narrative but also engages users by allowing them to explore and experience the vibrant past of the city in a dynamic and immersive way.
